Betsy Karmin is a Partner in the firm’s Real Estate Practice where she concentrates on a broad range of commercial real estate transactions, including financing, development, restructuring, acquisitions, sales and leasing.  Betsy represents landlords and tenants in office and retail leasing, including ground leases and multi-floor office leases, as well as lenders and borrowers for complex construction and permanent financing.  She also represents a national franchiser in structuring complex air rights and redevelopment projects and has extensive experience in equity investing for institutional investors in senior living, hospitality, office and retail assets.

Betsy previously served as President of the Washington, D.C. chapter of Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW).  She currently serves on the Board of Directors of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and on the Board of Directors of Goodwill of Greater Washington.  Betsy is also a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and D.C. Building Industry Association (DCBIA).

Representative Experience

  • A building owner for a 200,000 square foot lease to Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, which lease received the 2011 Washington Business Journal Best Real Estate Deal Award for Lease Renewal
  • A building owner for a 173,000 square foot lease to The CNA Corporation; this lease received the 2012 Commercial Real Estate Women Dealmaking Award
  • An international bank to foreclose/restructure two multifamily projects and an office building
  • A national equity investor in the joint venture acquisition of a 128,000 square foot office building
  • A national developer for a U.S. $175 million loan from a life insurance company secured by a 589,000 square foot office building
  • A national developer to negotiate an amendment and restatement of a complex ground lease for a 155,000 square foot office building
  • A national equity investor in the joint venture acquisition of four hotel properties in Florida
  • A national equity investor in the sale of 14 senior living facilities in Michigan and Illinois
  • Four different landlords in the lease of retail space to Whole Foods Market Group, Inc. in four different projects, including one lease that was a finalist for a 2012 Washington Business JournalBest Real Estate Deal Award for Best Retail Lease
