MMM Diversity Committee Gets Update on National Center for Civil and Human Rights

06.11.2012

Atlanta (June 2012) ─ The Diversity Committee of law firm Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP recently hosted an event to educate firm leaders, staff and clients about the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

The Center’s CEO, Doug Shipman, told the group that the groundbreaking will be June 27, with the grand opening expected in 2014. The Center describes itself as being committed to offering informative programs, convening groups concerned with human rights and hosting dynamic events.

The environmentally-friendly building will be located in the heart of downtown Atlanta near the Georgia Aquarium and World of Coke. The 90,000 square foot structure will feature both indoor and outdoors spaces displaying historical and modern-day exhibits.

Permanent installations will include the Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr. Collection.

The 10,000-piece collection, which offers an unparalleled view of Dr. King’s inspirational life and work, includes papers, hand-written notes and unpublished sermons. The Center, which will include spaces for field trips, meetings and other events, will also welcome traveling exhibits on a variety of topics.

Community support for the project is strong; several high-powered Atlanta leaders serve on its board of directors. A large number of corporate supporters have donated funds.

The June 4th presentation was part of the Diversity Committee’s Speaker Series. Upcoming events include an online webinar June 18 about the Americans with Disability Act (ADA).
