Alpert, Hinson Named to Inaugural Georgia Trailblazers List

10.04.2019

Atlanta (October 4, 2019) – The Daily Report has named Bob Alpert and Bess Hinson, two attorneys at Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP, to its inaugural list of Georgia Trailblazers.

Alpert is cited for his breakthrough work defending companies in the E-cigarette/vape business and Hinson, who chairs MMM’s Cybersecurity and Privacy practice, is recognized for helping corporate clients preserve the sanctity of their customers’ data.

“We are proud to spotlight a handful of individuals who are true agents for change,” said Richard Caruso, vice president and general manager of Legal Media, owner of The Daily Report. “In the midst of constant change, we wanted to highlight those that are sincerely innovators and thought leaders.”

Three years ago, Alpert took on a client with a novel problem: an electronic cigarette distributed by a client’s company blew up while a consumer was vaping. From that case, an E-cigarette/Vape practice was born, one of the first of its kind. Alpert represents manufacturers, distributors and retailers in what is known as ENDS – the electronic nicotine delivery system industry.

He has represented about two dozen ENDS clients in about 40 cases. With the Centers for Disease Control investigating recent deaths from a lung disease possibly tied to vaping, he expects the Food and Drug Administration to impose new regulations that either could stifle competition or create expensive barriers to entry that could drive small companies out of business. The group also offers proactive risk assessment and guidance with insurance.

Hinson’s seven-lawyer team works with clients on compliance with evolving cybersecurity laws, drafts privacy policies and responds to data breaches. “I was really fascinated by the data that was being collected about us and that we were willing to share,” she says. “It interested me in a way that traditional business torts and business litigation did not.”

Hinson is also the founder of the Atlanta Women in Cybersecurity Roundtable and wants to encourage more women to pursue careers in privacy law. With multi-tasking and managing cases so crucial, “I think it’s something we as women are well suited for,” she said.
