Dr. VanderVegt is a patent agent in the firm’s DC Intellectual Property Practice and has over 21 years of experience in patent law.  He has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of U.S. and foreign patent applications in a variety of fields including medical devices, biotechnology (e.g., immunology, therapeutics, diagnostics, vaccines, nucleic acid and protein compositions), agricultural, herbicides, bioremediation, packaging materials, and mechanical devices.  He has assisted with inter partes reviews, freedom-to-operate and patentability opinions; formulated freedom-to-operate and invalidity searches; and provided due diligence support and evaluation of patent portfolios.

Dr. VanderVegt also has experience in trademark and copyrights.

Dr. VanderVegt had 12 years of experience as Patent Examiner at the USPTO examining humoral and cellular immunology patent applications, including antigen presentation and complement pathways.

Dr. VanderVegt received his Ph.D. in medical genetics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he studied immunoregulatory mechanisms in autoimmune diseases, including myasthenia gravis and Guillain-Barre syndrome.  He completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the U.S. National Institutes of Health investigating autoantigens in Type I Diabetes Mellitus, after finishing a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Trudeau Institute, studying transplantation immunology and Toxoplasma gondii infections in immune-compromised subjects.
