Raleigh/Durham, NC (April 19, 2012) ─ The North Carolina Bar Association has chosen Keith Burns, who heads the Raleigh/Durham office of Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP, as a recipient of its 2012 Citizen Lawyer Award. The award recognizes attorneys who serve their communities, are positive role models and exemplify the ideals of the citizen lawyer.
Burns practices in the firm’s Real Estate Development and Finance, Corporate, Commercial Finance and Mergers & Acquisitions Practices. He holds – or has held – more than a dozen leadership positions with community, charitable and business organizations:
- He recently completed a term as Chair of the Boy Scouts of America, Durham District.
- The 2009 Chair of the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, he continues to serve on its Executive Committee.
- He is a board member of the Research Triangle Regional Partnership.
- He chairs the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership campaign.
- He is legal advisor to the:
- Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties
- Home Builders Association of Durham, Orange and Chatham Counties
- Burns is a members of the Sponsor Committee of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) ─ an organization supporting creative solutions to emerging land use issues. He has also served on ULI’s Program Committee.
- He is an instructor at Durham Tech’s Small Business Center.
Previous positions include chairing Durham County Habitat for Humanity, Durham County Meals on Wheels and the City of Durham’s Capital Program Advisory Committee. His positions with the Braxton Craven Inn of Court, which works to improve the skills, professionalism and ethics of the bench and bar, include President, Program Chair, Membership Chair and Executive Committee member. He has also been a Section Fellow of the American Bar Association Business Law Section, where he edited the Middle Market Committee newsletter. He has also served on the board of The Caring House. He is a graduate of Leadership Durham, Leadership Triangle and Leadership North Carolina.
Burns is among 13 recipients of the Citizen Lawyer Award, which will be presented at a Bar Association event on Friday, June 22.
