The Chicago Tribune interviewed our Bess Hinson about privacy concerns and lawsuits against popular social media app TikTok and its Chinese-owned parent company ByteDance Inc. The suit says TikTok uses facial recognition software, which collects biometric information that should be protected under Illinois’s Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA.) As a result, representatives of four Illinois minors are suing, claiming that there is insufficient disclosure that biometric information is being taken, whether or not the information is being stored, and that they did not give permission for the minors’ information to be collected. Hinson, who chairs MMM’s Privacy and Cybersecurity Practice, notes that the COVID-19 pandemic increases scrutiny on social media and other companies collecting data.
