Tim Tingkang Xia is a partner in the Intellectual Property Practice and a registered patent attorney. He leads the firm’s International Practice and Intellectual Property Practice. Dr. Xia counsels clients in all phases of intellectual property law, including U.S. and foreign patent, trademark and copyright prosecution, clearance, infringements, validity opinions, and licensing. His focus is primarily on patent prosecution and litigation in the areas of computers, electronics, optics, and new and complex technologies that are multi-discipline in nature, such as nanotechnologies, bioinformatics, supercomputing systems and superconductor materials and devices.
Dr. Xia has prepared and prosecuted more than 1,800 patent applications in a variety of areas, including telecommunications, optics, mechanical and electronic devices, nanotechnologies, liquid crystal display devices, MEMS devices, lasers, quantum spin devices, semiconductors, biotechnologies and various medical devices.
Dr. Xia also has a broad range of experience nationally and internationally in the arena of the intellectual property litigation, including patent, trademark, trade dress, copyright, and trade secret matters. He has been involved in cases in technologies as diverse as telecommunications, computer software, e-commerce, nanotechnologies, image-forming apparatus, electrical devices, optical devices, toner cartridges and toners, and chemical compounds in federal courts around the country.
Prior to his legal career, he was a physicist specializing in supercomputing, large scale computer simulation of complex fluids, super-thin-films of polymers, and Josephson junction superconducting arrays, electromagnetic properties of high Tc superconductors, and physics of granular metals. Dr. Xia has published his research results and discoveries in Science, Phys. Rev. Lett., Physics Review B, and other internationally leading academic research journals.
Dr. Xia’s clients have ranged from individual inventors and high-tech start ups to large international corporations and prestigious research universities and institutions around the world. Dr. Xia is a frequent speaker to technology and industry associations, international forums, universities, and to many other groups concerning international intellectual property protection, unique issues faced by U.S. research universities such as research use exemption, patent law, and other areas of the law.
