Thomas A. Player is a senior counsel to the Insurance and Reinsurance Practice. Mr. Player’s areas of expertise include serving as an arbitrator and umpire in complex insurance and reinsurance disputes. Mr. Player is a certified arbitrator of ARIAS U.S.
Mr. Player’s specialties include securing complex regulatory approvals, harmonizing regulatory and litigation settlements and advising on corporate transactions impacted by heavy insurance legal and regulatory concerns. Recent engagements include clients in China, Bermuda, Barbados and the Caymans.
Mr. Player was honored by Atlanta magazine as a “Georgia Super Lawyer” in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009, placing him in the top five percent of attorneys in the state.
Recent Experience
- Coordinated domestic and international insurance regulatory approvals on behalf of Dexia S.A. in its $816.5 million (U.S.) sale of FSA Holdings Ltd. and its insurance subsidiaries to Assured Guaranty Ltd.
- Advised BroadStreet Capital Partners, L.P. and other tender offer dealer managers on insurance regulatory considerations related to the Syncora Holdings Ltd. restructuring.
- Assisting foreign insurer in creating an innovative survivorship policy for the life settlement industry.
- Represented Bank of America in insurance matters in its acquisition of Countrywide.
- Assisted Goldman Sachs in various insurance matters, including its 2007 assumption reinsurance transaction involving The Fidelity Mutual Life Insurance Company and Commonwealth Annuity and Life Insurance Company.
- For long-standing client, Lincoln Financial Group, handled its multiple insurance company reorganization, including three mergers, one reinsurance transaction and one redomestication in 2006-2007.
- Joint representation of Texas Pacific Group and Calera Capital in the acquisition of a U.S. property and casualty company.
- Acting as Umpire in several complex insurance and reinsurance disputes.
