Morris, Manning & Martin Welcomes Energy Lawyer, Firm Establishes Energy & Infrastructure Finance Practice

Gregory D. Chafee has joined the Atlanta office of Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP as Of Counsel in the firm’s newly established Energy & Infrastructure Finance practice and the Green Industry and Corporate practices.

“Greg’s experience will add valuable support to the firm’s already significant Corporate and Green Industry practices,” said Managing Partner Robert E. Saudek. “In addition, the creation of an Energy and Infrastructure Finance practice expands the firm’s reach into these important, cutting edge areas.”

Mr. Chafee advises energy project developers, owners, investors and managers about federal, state and local regulatory compliance, permitting, financing, power supply, sales, marketing and distribution contracts and lease/purchase agreements. He has negotiated and structured complex transactions involving electrical production, natural gas transmission and the generation of alternative energy from biomass, solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower and other renewable resources.

As former General Counsel of DS Waters of America and Associate General Counsel of Georgia-Pacific Corporation, Mr. Chafee has extensive experience handling a wide range of commercial matters in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Latin American markets, including the formation and operation of public and privately held firms, limited liability companies, partnerships, international and domestic joint ventures and strategic alliances, equity and debt financing arrangements, corporate governance, recapitalization and mergers, acquisitions and divestitures.

He was most recently Counsel at Adler, Pollock & Sheehan, PC.

With this addition, Morris, Manning & Martin continues its strategic growth plan and expands its considerable knowledge base in the areas of energy and corporate law.

The Energy and Infrastructure Finance practice has tremendous experience in the areas of:

  • Development, permitting, regulatory issues and mergers & acquisitions
  • Power project development (including peaking, base-load and cogeneration facilities)
  • Acquisitions and divestitures
  • Construction and permanent project financings, including traditional bank financings, 144A financings, sale-leaseback transactions and synthetic leasing arrangements
  • Acquisition of pipelines and through-put agreements
  • Long-term and short-term power purchase and tolling agreements
  • Fuel supply agreements, fuel management contracts and power marketing arrangements
  • Commodity transmission contracts
  • Steam offtake arrangements and water supply contracts

Mr. Chafee received his J.D. from Boston University School of Law and his A.B., magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Brown University.
