Atlanta (September 27, 2018) – Morris, Manning & Martin has donated and helped raise more than $117,000 for its 2018 nonprofit partner Horizons Atlanta. Horizons is a regional network of summer learning programs for economically disadvantaged children.
“We are blown away by the generosity of Morris, Manning & Martin, its partners, associates, and their wider community,” said Horizons Atlanta Executive Director Alex Wan.
MMMPact, the law firm’s corporate social responsibility program, donates hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly to dozens of nonprofit organizations. It also picks one nonprofit – in this case, Horizons Atlanta – to be its annual partner. Horizons works to close the “opportunity gap” that low-income children face by delivering high-quality summer academic programs. The programs fight the “summer slide” – in which children lose academic progress made during the previous school year – and help students gain two to three months of reading and math growth while focusing on life skills, STEAM and enrichment activities.
The total amount raised was $117,640. Much of that came from MMM’s annual Cheers wine and beer tasting. The fundraiser, held Friday, Sept. 21 at the Buckhead Club, brought in $87,000 in sponsorships, ticket sales, donations and other purchases. Platinum sponsors of the event include The Atlanta Business Chronicle, The Atlanta Dream, Catalyst Fitness, First American Title, Good2Grow and the Partners of MMM. The donations from the firm’s partners endowed a $2,500 scholarship for a participant in the program. The firm donated another $30,000 independent of the event.
Horizons Atlanta Board Chair John Brock noted at the event that the nonprofit’s programs have changed the lives of thousands of students over the last nine years. Brock, the retired CEO of Coca-Cola European Partners, thanked MMM and Managing Partner Louise Wells for supporting the organization both financially and as volunteers.
Wells, who is also on the Horizons Atlanta Board, noted that she has seen the difference the organization makes in children’s lives during her family’s two decades of involvement. “It’s really a heartwarming organization,” she concluded.
