Arne to Speak on Open Source at National Event

03.07.2016

Atlanta (March 7, 2016) – Managing the use of open source software is the topic Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP’s Paul Arne will address in a national conference and webinar. Arne is on the faculty of the “Advanced Licensing Agreements 2016” conference hosted by the Practising Law Institute (PLI), a leading provider of continuing legal education. The March 7-8 event is being held in New York and broadcast live via webcast.

Many companies use Open Source software because it is easy to find, evaluate and incorporate into existing development projects. And it is considerably less expensive than big-brand software – sometimes even free. But unique issues can evolve over time.

Arne, who has been active in legal issues surrounding Open Source technology for more than a decade, will address issues including the creation of processes and policies for managing the identification and management of Open Source software patent issues. There are more than 2.5 million different Open Source packages available, and over 1,500 different licenses have been identified.

“Open Source Technology can be extremely useful, but it can also pose unexpected challenges in a corporate environment. In this context, you often get what you measure, and the failure to manage open source software can result in disastrous consequences, especially for companies that offer software to customers,” Arne says.

Other sophisticated licensing issues on the agenda of the two day conference include copyright, patents and trademark issues; big data; special considerations relating to cloud computing; risk management and indemnification; life sciences and publicity licensing; negotiation strategies, and many more. The program is designed on those with intellectual property law experience and devote a substantial amount of their practice to licensing.
