Working at MMM | Summer Associate Program

At Morris, Manning & Martin, we view our Summer Associate Program as the key to attracting highly motivated, well-rounded individuals to our firm. The program, which includes both second and first year law students, provides the participants with an opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a variety of practice areas. The program also allows students to gain a true understanding of what life as an attorney at the firm will be like. Students who participate in our Summer Associate Program will quickly recognize why Morris, Manning & Martin is the firm of choice.

Goals and Objectives

We intend to hire all students who participate in our Summer Associate Program as associates after they graduate. To that end, we carefully screen summer associate candidates. Positions in our Summer Associate Program are offered to students who demonstrate strong academic and leadership abilities as well as a proficiency in balancing the demands of law school with participation in extra-curricular activities and the pursuit of personal interests. During the Summer Associate Program, we attempt to introduce students to a broad range of practice areas within the firm so that they can determine the path their career will take. Most of our associates and partners actively participate in the program, which gives students an opportunity to get to know the people with whom they will be working, now and in the future.

On Campus Recruiting

Unfortunately, we cannot interview students at every law school where we believe there are quality candidates. Thus, we encourage top students who attend law schools where we do not interview to send their resume and transcript to our Recruiting Coordinator, Stacie Pugh, at the following address:

Assignments and Evaluation

While we encourage participants in our Summer Associate Program to take assignments in different practice areas, we do not force them to do so, in that we do not have a formal rotation. To the contrary, we generally allow our summer associates to direct the type of work they receive according to their areas of interest. For those students who have not yet developed a particular area of interest, we endeavor to introduce them to a variety of practice areas through diverse work assignments.

Work assignments involve meaningful issues and problems that require careful consideration and creative solutions. We want participants in our Summer Associate Program to perform work similar to that of young associates at the firm, and our assignments are crafted with this goal in mind. Of course, our attorneys do not spend each and every day in their offices, and we work hard to include our summer associates in projects that will take them outside the office. A summer associate may attend depositions, hearings, closings or client conferences during his or her time in our Summer Associate Program.

Attorneys who supervise projects complete thorough, written evaluations on the performance of the summer associate upon completion of the project. Additionally, our attorneys attempt to provide feedback to each summer associate during the course of a project. Summer associates are encouraged to ask questions of and collaborate with supervising attorneys on every project.

Mentoring

At the beginning of the summer, we assign each summer associate with a partner and associate mentor. We create these pairings based on the areas of practice in which the summer associate has expressed an interest and other intangibles in an effort to create the best possible relationships. Each of these mentors will be a guide to their mentee, serving as a friendly resource on all matters associated with the Summer Associate Program, the firm, and the practice of law generally.

Training

The firm emphasizes traditional training for summer associates, holding numerous seminars on substantive legal topics. Several of these seminars are for summer associates only, while others involve summer associates and attorneys. We design each seminar to sharpen the legal skills of those who attend and introduce practice pointers to allow us to better serve our clients.

Additionally, Morris, Manning & Martin prides itself on the level of practical experience it provides its young attorneys. We extend that effort to our summer associates, asking them to attend depositions, board meetings, client conferences, negotiations, court arguments and drafting sessions so they can better appreciate what they will be asked to do as attorneys at the firm. We believe that these experiences are rewarding and exciting for our summer associates.

Firm Culture

Founded in 1976 with eight attorneys, Morris, Manning & Martin has grown to become one of the largest and most successful law firms in Atlanta. While we afford our clients and attorneys the benefits of a large and diverse practice, we make great efforts to maintain a "small firm" culture. We pride ourselves on our fresh ideas and enthusiasm in the approach we bring to the practice of law. This atmosphere makes working at our firm rewarding, and allows our summer associates to feel genuinely welcomed here.

In addition to our Atlanta office, we maintain an office in Washington, D.C., Charlotte, North Carolina, and several offices in outlying counties north of Atlanta focusing on residential real estate.

Social Events

We feel it is important to get to know the participants in our Summer Associate Program on a personal level. To accomplish this goal, the firm provides a variety of optional social activities for the summer associates. In the past, these activities have included white water rafting trips, Braves games, Whirlyball, IMAX at the Fernbank Museum and outdoor amphitheater concerts. Partners and associates also host dinners and parties at their homes for summer associates. Additionally, all summer associates are invited to attend the firm's annual retreat.

At Morris, Manning & Martin, we realize that the people with whom you work matter just as much as the work you perform and the clients you represent, and we make great efforts to get to know one another, both during the summer and throughout the year.

Pro Bono and Community Service

Morris, Manning & Martin recognizes the responsibility of attorneys to serve the greater community. The firm has a formal pro bono program where the firm supports certain pro bono initiatives, and where each attorney receives annual billable credit for up to 50 hours of pro bono work performed. We encourage our summer associates to work with attorneys on pro bono projects in various matters, including the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, Sheltering Arms, and Point Community Action Team. We also participate in various community service projects throughout the year, including Service Juris Day during the summer.
