James “Mac” Hunter is a partner in the firm’s Corporate, Healthcare, Employment, Eminent Domain and Exempt Organizations Practices. Mr. Hunter provides a broad spectrum of legal services to business and commercial clients, including advice to clients in the formation, structuring and governance of their business entities. With his extensive background in the general representation of physicians, physician groups, hospitals and medical schools, Mr. Hunter advises healthcare clients and other clients in mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, business formations and practice affiliations. He also has over 30 years experience counseling business clients in connection with employment and diversity matters and is often involved in litigating these matters before administrative bodies and the courts. He also represents clients involved in eminent domain and regulatory matters.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Hunter was a partner at an AmLaw 100 firm, where he focused on business, healthcare, employment, diversity, eminent domain and international matters. Mr. Hunter was chief legal officer for a local Atlanta company for 10 years. He was also a senior trial attorney with the U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission where was responsible for litigating some of the first cases under the 1972 Amendment to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

For the past five years, Mr. Hunter has been honored as a “Georgia Super Lawyer” by Atlanta Magazine, designated as being in the top five percent of attorneys in the state. Mr. Hunter has received an AV Rating through a peer review process with Martindale - Hubbell, the highest rating for a lawyer.


Recent Experience

Joyce Williams v. Southside Medical Center, Inc. and Dr. Otto Goyco - Jury verdict on all counts in favor of Southside and Dr. Goyco, in case involving sexual harassment, negligent retention, assault, and emotional distress claims. (Federal District Court, Northern District of Georgia)

Sharon Simmons, Administrator of Estate of Trina Elliott v. Southside Medical Center, Inc., et al. - Summary Judgment in favor of Southside and individual providers on medical malpractice claims not covered by Federal Tort Claims Act. Case referred by the 11th Circuit to the Georgia Supreme Court where the ruling secured in Federal District Court on the Statute of Repose was upheld. This ruling by the Georgia Supreme Court established new law in Georgia on the Statute of Repose. (Federal District Court; 11th Circuit Court of Appeals; Georgia Supreme Court)

Suziett Mount v. Southside Healthcare, Inc. - Summary Judgment in favor of Southside on sexual harassment, discharge, retaliation, and emotional distress claims. (Federal District Court, Northern District of Georgia)

EEOC v. Bronner Brothers, Inc. - Summary Judgment in favor of Bronner Brothers in a religious discrimination case. (Federal District Court, Northern District of Georgia)

Sharon Robinson v. Upscale Magazine, Inc. - Summary Judgment in favor of Upscale on issues of sexual harassment, sex discrimination and retaliation. (Federal District Court, Northern District of Georgia)

Janice Phillips v. Atlanta Neighborhood Development Center, Inc. - Summary Judgment on age discrimination and disability discrimination claims. (Federal District Court, Northern District of Georgia)
